Impumelelo has become a prestigious national and international award programme, professionally executed, which has attracted some of government’s and civil society’s best examples of service delivery.

Impumelelo submits its top award winners to other international award programmes such as the United Nations Public Service Award and the Dubai International Award for Best Practices with astonishing success. Recent award winners include the Phelophepa Health Care Train and Marianhill Landfill Conservancy amongst others.

Professional experts evaluate submissions by conducting site visits, writing reports and making recommendations to as to the project’s praise-and/or prize worthiness. Impumelelo’s award cycle follows a 4-phase process to identify and reward innovation and best practice

  1. Impumelelo sends out more than 3000 applications to public officials, NGOs and other organisations.
  2. Short-lists the top 100 projects.
  3. Team of between 30-40 evaluators are sent to all corners of South Africa.
  4. 40 are short-listed based on the recommendations from evaluators and are invited to present in front of the Impumelelo National Selection Panel.

Impumelelo awards projects in 3 categories of Platinum, Gold and Silver and the prize money must be used for two purposes:

  • help share and encourage adaptation.
  • disseminate the success story.

As Impumelelo is an Non-Profit Organisation, its monetary prizes depend on corporate and donor sponsorships.
