Go for Gold Programme
The Go for Gold Programme was established in April of 1999 as a section 21 company under the auspices of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA), the Amy Biehl Foundation and Neil Muller Construction (NMC). The programme was created to build a skilled labor base to draw from in undeserved, underrepresented segments of the community. Particular interest was expressed in sustainable long term job creation in the construction industry. This project uses multiple phases to produce a quality candidate who are initiated with tutoring in mathematics and science, for highly motivated, exemplary students, in their matric year. After three years of tertiary training, using innovative techniques in support and real world experience during the education process, participants supported in a vigorus job search.
The Integrated Serviced Land Project – An Early Childhood Development Pilot Project
The non-profit organisation called Integrated Serviced Land Project (ISLP) launched a pilot scheme in March 2001 under the guidance of the Center for Early Childhood Development (ECD). The target areas were Brown's Farm, Crossraods, Delft, Philippi and Weltevreden Valley, all plagued by unemployment, crime and rising levels of HIV infection.
Cape Flats Nature
In July 2002 the City of Cape Town, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Table Mountain Fund, the Botanical Society of South Africa, along with the International Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund launched the Cape Flats Nature Project. The project was initiated to create good practices in sustainable management of nature conservation areas in Cape Town, particularly in the Edith Stephens Wetland Park, the Harmony Flats Nature Reserve, the Macassar Dunes, and the Wolfgat Nature Reserve .
Operation Thiba to Combat Stock theft in Limpopo Province
The South African Police Service initiated Operation Thiba in the Limpopo Province in January of 2004. The local police department, farmers' organisations, the Departments of Health, Agriculture, and Safety and Security, Chiefs and Indunos are combating stock theft in Limpopo Province. The partnerships created under Operation Thiba ensured thorough investigation of cases involving theft of cattle and sheep, through community involvement, and more rigorous compliance with legislation.
Beaufort West Hydroponics Company
Beaufort West Hydroponics Company, initiated in the Western Cape, is managed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and receives financial backing from the Provincial Department of Economic Development and Social Services (PDEDSS) along with the national Department of Science and Technology (DST). The main objective of the project is to create jobs in the Beaufort-West region where the unemployment rate is between 45 and 50 percent.
The Learning Channel
The Liberty Life Learning Channel, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) are working in conjunction with their business partners Johnnic Communications Media, Distance Learning Trust and William Smith to produce quality educational programming focused on grades 10 through 12 . The Learning Channel is a live broadcast, phone-in, syllabus-specific education programme on SABC-3. It airs for 2 hours, 6 days a week focusing on four key subjects: English, Maths, Science and Biology. The content is driven in part by syllabus requirements and the needs of the pupils phoning-in.
GAPA: Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS
The Albertina and Walter Sisulu Institute for Ageing in Africa (UCT) conducted research into the plight of grandmothers living on the Cape Flats who head households affected by HIV/AIDS. The 2001 study showed that household poverty was made worse by a family member contracting HIV and subsequently dying. As a result of this study, Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA) was formed to build capacity and provide support to elderly women, often grandmothers of children whose parents died of HIV/AIDS related causes. Partnerships were created with Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA), the Social Services and Poverty Alleviation Department of the Western Cape, and the National Department of Social Development through the Independent Development Trusts, Cape Town. The goal of the initiative is to build the capacity for grandmothers to cope with the effects of HIV/AIDS within their families and communities.
Siyancuma Municipality HIV/AIDS Task Team
The Siyancuma Local Municipality (SLM) HIV/AIDS Task Team, funded by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities (SALA) and the Swedish Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA), was created to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the Northern Cape towns of Siyancuma, Douglas, Griekwastad, Campbell and Schmidtsdrift. The SLM's Core Task Team (CTT), along with the Broader Task Team (BTT) conducted innovative primary research into the rate of infection in these cities. After the data had been gathered the CTT, with the BTT, fashioned a holistic approach to the erradication of AIDS/HIV in the community through awareness, prevention techniques, and poverty alleviation through job creation.
Philani Outreach/IMCI Programme
The Philani Outreach programme, established in 1980, was created to address community based health needs and nutrition on the outskirts of Cape Town - Khayelitsha (site C, B, Town 2, Mayebuye, Harare), Philippi (Brown's Farm), Crossroads, Nyanga/KTC Delft, and Mfuleni. In 2000, a partnership between the Philani Outreach programme and The Department of Health's Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), was launched to specifically target children suffering from malnutrition, lack of health care, HIV/AIDS infection, and to educate and support mothers in providing a better quality of life for their children.
18.2 Learnerships
The Eben Dönges Hospital (EDH), through the Department of Health (DoH), in partnership with the Health Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) and the Department of Education (DoE), developed training programmes for disadvantaged community members from the Boland-Overberg Region in Auxiliary Nursing in order to combat high levels of unemployment and a shortage of skilled nurses. The programme was created and implemented as an in-house, hands-on poject that allowed participants to garner enough experience and education through the programme to sit for the South African Nursing Council (SANC) formal exams at the end of 1 year of training and education.
