Sakhasonke Village Housing Initiative
The Sakhasonke Village, built in the former Walmer area of Port Elizabeth, was initiated in 2002 by the General Motors South Africa Foundation. It is an expansion and improvement on the success of the Missionvalle housing initiative in 1998 (Impumelelo winner in 1999).
Dance For All
In 1991, CAPAB’s (now Cape Town Ballet) principal dancer, Philip Boyd, recognized that the company lacked African dancers and that there was no training system for the poor and disadvantaged youth. He then began Ballet for All in the Cape Town township of Gugelethu, training 34 students in ballet. By 1995, different styles of dance were incorporated and the company became Dance For All (DFA).
Mariannhill Landfill Conservancy
In eThekwini Municipality in KZN, a quiet revolution in waste management has been underway by the Department of Solid Waste. There in 1995, for the first time in South Africa, and perhaps the world, a landfill has been named a conservancy site.
Mothers2Mothers
Established in September 2001, Mother2mothers (M2M) (NPO) operates from the Khayelitsha health clinic and is an innovative health care facility-based education and support programme for pregnant women and new mothers living with HIV
Phelophepa Healthcare Train
The former Bantustans of South Africa were poorly serviced during the apartheid period. The Phelophepa Healthcare Train was established in 1994 by the Transnet Foundation to provide healthcare to the rural areas.
