ANGELS OF GLORY: Youth Advocacy & Empowerment Project
In the rural areas of Temba and Moretele in the North West province, drugs and crime have become widespread amongst young people. A 60% unemployment among youth, with 33% having never worked a day, exacerbate matters. In this environment, Angels of Glory provides youth advocacy and empowerment. It serves as a haven for juveniles in conflict with the law and helps them develop skills that could be used to better themselves.
CANSA KATLEHO INTERIM HOME
The Cancer Association of South Africa was begun in 1931 to address the prevention, diagnosis and care of cancer patients in South Africa. CANSA now has 8 provincial offices and 43 regional offices. Cancer is the second most moribund disease in the country after HIV/AIDS and affects 1:4 men and 1:5 women. Its incidence has been on the rise in conjunction with HIV/AIDS and Karposi’s Sarcoma, the cancer associated with HIV/AIDS.
ETHEKWINI WATER AND DEBT RELIEF PROGRAMME
The eThekwini Municipality has trouble with non-payment of services. Water is supplied but the poor haven’t been paying for it. To address this, the Department of Water Affairs established a debt relief program that is more than just a write off of debt but a rewards program aimed to encourage regular service payments and reduced use.
THE HAMMARSDALE SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT
The Hammarsdale area in KwaZulu-Natal is dominated mainly by the textile industry. These textile industries have never made much attempt at being environmentally-friendly, and this has resulted in the Hammarsdale Wastewater Treatment Works (HWWTW) becoming overloaded with colour and salt. The pollution is then passed on to the Sterkspruit river, which runs through a number of farms and dams downstream.
JUNIOR LANDCARE - MINWATER/ LITTLE KAROO
In 2001 the Department of Agriculture in Minwater/ Little Karoo became aware of the alarming loss of natural resources and biodiversity in the Little Karoo in the Western Cape and sought to address the community about it.Throughout the Little Karoo priority area Junior Landcare began a series of educational projects aimed at teaching the youth about the need for conservation and about the amazing biodiversity of their area.
WINTERVELDT CITRUS PROJECT
The Winterveldt Citrus Project was started July 2002 as a section 21 company (reg no. 2004/018858/08) in the Winterveldt area, Gauteng and the North West but falling within the Tshwane municipality.
MODIMOLA EPWP PROJECT
There is a current drive in the North West to address the Marginalised Economy within the province. One part of this was labour-intensive, labour-based road construction and maintenance. However, it was decided that, before the project was rolled out to the whole province, it would first be implemented on a pilot basis in a smaller area.
RENDERING OF WASTE MANAGEMENT SERVICES BY COMMUNITY COOPERATIVES
In response to the dual problem of inefficient waste management services and high unemployment in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the Eastern Cape, the Municipal government instituted an Alternative Service Delivery method to come up with a better way to get it done.
SCHOOLS AND SUSTAINABILITY: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATORS
Ethekwini Water and Sanitation have been working for years to spread the water supply and sanitation services throughout the eThekwini Municipality. It has done so with considerable success but one area lacking was in schools. To address this need, EWS has established a teacher’s professional development course to train teachers in the environment and sustainability in schools.
