Media and Advocacy
Impumelelo has established itself as an unique organisation for the
media to use as a source of good news, and a resource to consult with
when reporting on issues about South Africa’s service delivery.
Impumelelo has spent the past 10 years unearthing the
definitive database of South African success-stories of creativity and
leadership in the public-sector. Through this the media is able to
inform others about the bright ideas from across the country that have
proved themselves at the forefront of innovation both locally and
internationally.
These are exciting community-driven solutions to specific problems
that challenge the vast majority of South Africans in areas like
primary health care, unemployment, hiv/aids,
education, the environment, housing, criminal
justice, transport, skills development, water, the Arts,
and sanitation and more. They are initiatives that come from both
government and civil society, all nine provinces, and work in both
rural and urban areas.
The media’s reputation of persistent negativity, can be refuted with
Impumelelo’s national network of excellence of more than 200 projects
at the coalface of finding African solutions to very real South African
problems.
Impumelelo uses these examples of service delivery to train others,
through its national best-practice workshops. These have grown into a
coveted forum where government and civil society are able to connect
and learn from one another. These workshops have consistently
highlighted important issues in specific sectors, that is vital for
change-makers like the media to be informed about, and educate others
who would benefit from having these solutions replicated in their
area.
Impumelelo urges media across the country to join its mission to
inform others that there is no need to reinvent the wheel, that there
are South African solutions to South African problems by creating
fruitful partnerships to showcase these good news stories and realise
this goal.
