Impumelelo presents the 2010 Sustainability Awards
The Impumelelo Social Innovations Centre is launching the 2010 SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS to coincide with its 10th anniversary celebrations. Having awarded 268 exceptional public service projects since 1999, the World Cup is the ideal platform to generate new thinking around sustainable development and poverty reduction.
2010 provides South Africans with the opportunity to change the way we live, produce, and consume. Climate change, global warming, carbon emissions, and sustainable development – are but a few of the buzz words of the 21st century. In the last two decades we have seen real environmental threats to the sustainability of the earth, threats that cause life on earth to be so much more unsustainable. The poor, especially, are the most vulnerable groups in this regard as they do not have the means to compensate for the consequences. Unless we take positive measures to change the way we live, we shall compromise the abilities of future generations to meet their needs.
The 2010 SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS is an incentive for government, business, and civil society to think creatively and innovatively about how we can become “greener” in all aspects of our lives. How do we transform a landfill into a conservation paradise that inspires citizens to turn waste into sustainable livelihoods? How do we inspire business to reduce their effluent waste into taxable income? How do we reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere? How do we use theatre to educate the public about sanitation and preventable diseases, like cholera, klebsiella, and tyhoid?
In a developing country like SA, these are the challenges that can be transformed into opportunities if only we start to think and act differently. Innovation calls for thinking that is imaginative, creative, and novel.
The 2010 SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS is the opportunity to show your commitment to addressing challenges in the following areas:
If you have demonstrated your expertise in addressing any of these challenges through a project or programme that is novel, creative and innovative, Impumelelo invites you to apply for the 2010 SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS. Impumelelo distinguishes between the prize-worthy and the praiseworthy and will honour the top ten winners with monetary grants to be used by projects to spread their success story to communities elsewhere in South Africa.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS 21st August 2009.
