In an attempt to increase our footprint in the Northern Cape, Impumelelo hosted a one-day workshop at the William Humphrey’s Art Gallery in Kimberley. All environmental, sanitation, housing and agriculture managers in the local municipalities were invited.

Presenters:

  • Lance del Monte - Sakhasonke Housing Village (Eastern Cape)
  • Teddy Gounden - eThekwini Water & Sanitation Programme (KwaZulu-Natal)
  • Rob Small - Abalimi Bezekhaya (Western Cape)
  • John Parkin (Mariannhill Landfill Conservancy)
  • Donovan Fullard - Outreach Greening & Greening of the Nation Programme (Western Cape)

Snapshot of Issues Discussed:

  • Housing:  Successful housing projects required beneficiary involvement from conceptualisation to design and implementation to post development support.
  • Water and Sanitation: local conditions determined the type of water and sanitation options that were implemented.
  • Urban agriculture: Key solution to food security and poverty reduction.
  • Solid Waste Management: By transforming methane into electricity incomes can be generated for the poor and local municipalities; supply electricity to local grids, hereby addressing South Africa’s electricity shortages and reduce South Africa's carbon footprint.
  • Environmental Education:  Integrating this kind of education into school cirricula was imperative to educate South Africa’s children about sustainable development by promoting the sustainable use, conservation, appreciation and enjoyment of the rich plant life in South Africa.
