Overview
Thirty five award-winning projects from government and civil society presented their socially-innovative models that address skills development challenges in the following sectors:
- Health and Social Development;
- Early Childhood Development;
- Arts & Crafts;
- Mathematics, Science and Technology Education;
- Job creation for Women;
- Income-generation;
- Expanded Public Works and Construction.
South African government practitioners and managers presented overviews of government policy and demonstrated how their programmes are addressing the problem of unemployment. They included:
- Danita Welgemoed & Sandra Fortuin - Western Cape Department of Education;
- Herman Gribble - Department of Transport and Public Works;
- Rosemary Byrnes - Department of Health;
- Brian Forbes - Government Consultant;
- Bronwin Abrahams - Manufacturing, Engineering & Related Services SETA.
Leading University of Cape Town academics; Prof. Mike Savage, Tony Morphet, and Lucy Holborn from the South African Institute of Race Relations - gave informative presentations on Sector Education Training Authorities and unemployment trends in South Africa.
