Poverty Impact

The demonstrable effect of the Project in improving the quality of life of poor communities and individuals.

Sustainability

The viability and sound functioning of the Project within constraints that include funding and staffing.

Replicability

The value of the Project in teaching others new ideas and good practises for poverty-reduction programmes.

5 projects were awarded Gold in 2001.

Meiringspoort: Repair of Trunk Road 33/4 by flood damage

The objective of the project was to implement permanent repairs to the flood damaged road through the Swartberg Mountain between De Rust and Klaarstroom. Rest area facilities were also established. The local communities manage these.

Choice Home-Based Care Project

ChoiCe (Comprehensive health Care) is a non-profit Trust that was initiated in 1997. It focuses on Community Health Projects in the rural areas in the Lowveld region of the Northern Province. This Province has experienced the highest percentage rate of increase of HIV/AIDS, with the highest rate observed among young men and women.

South Coast Hospice Association (ICHC/PAT Partnership UGU)

Concerns about the growing number of AIDS patients in the UGU South District of KwaZulu-Natal resulted in the development of an Integrated Community-Based Home Care model (ICHC). Primary health care clinics, Hospice, Murchison Hospital, AIDS organisations and the local community are all involved in the programme.

The Moddergat River Improvement Scheme

The Scheme is an initiative of the City of Cape Town's Catchment Management Department. It aims to implement infrastructure for flood management in the urban areas of Firgrove and Macassar. Construction-related work has served as a catalyst and medium for a range of supporting projects, funded from the contract budget, that serve broader aims than just traditional flood management, and give effect to the City's vision of a world-class city.

Tembisa Food Garden

The project operates in the Kempton Park Tembisa area. Local unemployed youth and women are trained to establish food gardens on open spaces in the township.
