Sustainability

The viability and sound functioning of the Project within constraints that include funding and staffing.

Replicability

The value of the Project in teaching others new ideas and good practises for poverty-reduction programmes.

The project was launched on 16th June 2000. It aims to help combat the escalating crime and gang activities in the Western Cape through skills development and social upliftment. Through education and youth development, the project provides previously disadvantaged youth with life skills, empowerment opportunities and a general enrichment of their personal lives.

SAPS Matlala: Youth Leaders Against Crime

The project is established in the Matlala police area, which covers Makgabeng, Matlala and part of Moletjie. It was initiated in 1998 for unemployed / indigent youth, with the aim of combating alcohol abuse and high local crime, and to expose the youth to possible alternatives.

Soweto AIDS Programme of Hope Worldwide

AIDS support groups are maintained at 11 clinics throughout Soweto. The project provides multi-level, holistic support to HIV positive patients, and it provides training in AIDS prevention. This is achieved by means of integration with the Department of Health facilities and staff.

The Consolidated Municipal Infrastructure Programme (CMIP): Xalanga Water Supply Project

The inhabitants of the Xalanga area, part of the Ukhahlamba District municipality, are faced with inadequate, unsafe and unhygienic water. The Water Services Audit provided a social, technical and financial basis for the setting of priorities for the upgrading of the water supply. A short-term implementation list was compiled. Accordingly, 21 villages were supplied with a basic water supply system. Each village selected supervisors, construction teams and facilitators to ensure community participation.

Yonder Centre is a protected workshop and after care centre for mentally handicapped adults. The Centre can accommodate 230 residents and 40 non-residents.
