MaAfrika Tikkun: Informal Education Project

MaAfrika Tikkun is a Jewish Initiative that provides social development services across the country. It is a registered Non-Profit Organisation that has been active for 13 years and operates in various areas of South Africa, mainly on the Reef and in Cape Town.

The project was started in 2001 and is a voluntary after-school programme in 22 schools across the Cape Metro. It addresses behaviours, values and beliefs at the root of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, while preparing for the leadership crisis being precipitated by the disease. It has 2 major programmes, the Student for Student (SFS) and the GoLD (Generation of Leaders Discovered) programmes.  Both initiatives provide important leadership opportunities for Grade 10 and 11 students to become junior facilitators. Associated are 3 additional activities, a Dance and Drama Group, a MaAfrika Tikkun Youth Council and an annual youth conference or imbizo. These activities are supported by a staff of 8 people.

Innovation

Schools are selected by a process of referrals by students, teachers, community members and principals. A series of interviews with key members of the school then takes place and the school ‘atmosphere’ and the ‘attitudes’ encountered are assessed.

Effectiveness

The SFS programme is currently rolled out at 7 High and 12 Primary schools. It builds self-confidence, develops pride in students' heritage and friendships across geographic, cultural and language divides. It encourages youth to contribute to community development in both their schools and their communities and consciously supports and encourages positive role modelling. It also develops long-term relationships with beneficiaries - schools, parents, teachers, principals and students.

Poverty Impact

This project challenges the beneficiaries’ worldview and encourages and equips them to reach out and take charge despite their circumstances.

Sustainability

Due to it’s secure donor fund base and the low staff turnover rate within the organisation, institutional memory has been cemented in all its operating procedures.

Replication

The project is replicable and given its secure donor base is sustainable. It operates in a positive and cooperative way with the Department of Education through many schools and addresses directly the impoverished circumstances and life-styles of those living in poverty.
