PAST WORKSHOPS
Housing
26 August 2005: Housing remains one of the most contentious and politically sensitive issues in South Africa today. The “chasing the numbers” approach by the government has not endeared itself to communities where quality, sustainability, and social interaction have perennially been the cause of social conflict.
Public Works
27 & 28 September 2005: Public employment schemes have been one of the ways that governments have dealt with poverty since the start of the industrial revolution. Impumelelo gathered experts such as Dr Sean Phillips who headed up the Impumelelo award winning Re-a-Shoma project to address other practitioners in the public works arena.
HIV/AIDS I
16-17 May 2007: Projects that presented represent a range of interventions, which include large-scale provincial initiatives as well as more focused urban and rural projects. Most of the projects concentrate on treatment, care and support.
Education and Skills Development Training
10-11 April 2008: 90% of the award-winners in this sector have been Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Their independence means they more easily apply innovative procedures at will and are able to circumvent red tape that is often an obstacle to success in this sector.16 projects, all Impumelelo award winners gave practical expression to how they address the skills issue.
HIV/AIDS II
11-12 September 2008: Building on the first HIV/AIDS workshop in 2007, Impumelelo's latest award winners including ARK's Dr Ashraf Grimwood and Sizophila's Dr Linda-Gail Bekker shared their best practices with more than 110 participants.
Environment Workshop
7-8 May 2009: In partnership with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), Impumelelo hosted its second Environment workshop at the banks Vulindlela Institute. Conservation, Waste Management, Pollution, and Awareness Raising were some of the issues the award winners presented.
Northern Cape Best-Practice Workshop
13 November 2009: Impumelelo convened a workshop in Kimberley at the iconic William Humphrey's Art Gallery, introducing government and civil society to the work we do. We brought some of the brightest ideas in housing, urban agriculture, environmental education, sanitation and waste management to the Northern Cape.
